The ‘Get to Know’ series highlights the missions and contributions of NCSSM working groups, giving them a platform to share their impact with colleagues across the institution.

The Chancellor’s Office serves as the guiding force for the entire NCSSM institution. As the first point of contact for the University of North Carolina System and the NCSSM Board of Trustees, the department ensures that NCSSM remains aligned with its mission while addressing the needs of various stakeholders. Despite being a small team, the Chancellor’s Office manages an extensive workload throughout the year, and while the spring and summer months are particularly demanding, there is no room for a "summer break."

A Commitment to Excellence

The Chancellor’s Office embodies the core values of NCSSM by fostering strong connections, addressing challenges with agility, and driving institutional success. Their unwavering commitment ensures that NCSSM remains a top-tier institution and a leader in STEM education.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

The Chancellor’s Office collaborates closely with the UNC System, sharing Chief Audit Officer Carol Harris and Chief Legal Counsel Mike Delafield to ensure seamless coordination across institutions.

Chancellor Roberts tirelessly addresses the needs of NCSSM’s diverse stakeholders, including students, employees, alumni, parents, leadership boards, the UNC System, and the North Carolina Legislature. As Chancellor for both the Durham and Morganton campuses, he ensures a strong presence at both locations through intentional travel and engagement, balancing strategic oversight with hands-on leadership across NCSSM’s growing footprint.

While plans may be in place for the week, the dynamic nature of the work often requires the team to pivot quickly to new priorities. Their ability to adapt and respond ensures the institution’s success, even when unexpected challenges arise.

The Chancellor's Office is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where all students, faculty, and staff have the opportunity to thrive. Jamie Butler, who recently shifted into a newly refined role, as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student and Employee Success, plays a key role in engaging students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners to cultivate behaviors, attitudes, and policies that support belonging and engagement across NCSSM.

Through the leadership of Laura Baker Campbell and Deann Barger, the Chancellor’s Office organizes all-employee meetings and events throughout the year, fostering connection, idea-sharing, and collaboration among administration, faculty, and staff. These gatherings strengthen NCSSM’s sense of community and engagement.

In addition to strategic leadership, the Chancellor’s Office oversees facilities use across NCSSM, ensuring that spaces are used effectively to support both internal needs and external partnerships.

Accomplishments and Impact

The Chancellor’s Office prides itself on delivering high-quality results under any circumstance, demonstrating resilience, adaptability, and dedication to NCSSM’s mission.

Did you know NCSSM ranks among the highest in overall employee satisfaction among the 17 UNC System institutions? While there are always areas for growth, the administration consistently works to address concerns, enhance workplace culture, and make NCSSM a desirable place to work.

NCSSM continues to set the bar for residential STEM education nationwide, reinforcing its reputation for academic excellence and innovation.
